THE Milanese may be renowned for their footballing prowess – but when it comes to them getting their kicks over summer, the only place to go is South Cumbria.

A pair of siblings from the home of AC, Internazionale and the San Siro were among the children who spent two days working with coaches at Ulverston Leisure Centre.

James and India Vasini, who were visiting grandparents during the school holidays, had a great time among the score of youngsters on the 3G pitch enjoying the summer sunshine.

“It was really well attended,” said Ulverston Leisure Centre’s Hannah Paling, who helped run the two-day camp for five to 11-year-olds.

“They actually wanted to play football as well! A lot of the time, they can come along but not actually want to play.

“There were a lot of games – penalty shoot-outs and matches – and we gave out a medal at the end of each day for the player-of-the-day.”

Whereas at the beginning of the summer, the weather did not play ball and meant the children spent some time indoors, this week proved a great success under blue skies – even if the temperatures could not match those in Lombardy. Given Milan and the rest of the Mediterranean have been baking in plus-35C heat at times, that was no problem.

Paling was pleased to see the children out there on the centre’s 3G pitch, and added: “They know to bring clothes for all weather, but it was fine. It’s good to have them out on the 3G pitch – the kids love it on there. They can play one big game, or have two games on at the same time.”

There will be five days of multi-sport activities at Ulverston Leisure Centre next week, between Monday and Friday. They are open to all five to 11-year-olds, and take place between 10am and 3pm each day.

Activities include football, dodgeball, swimming and tennis.

There will also be a two-day festival of sport on Thursday, August 31 and Friday, September 1.
