THERE were goals galore on Lesh Lane, as Barrow Wanderers Under-11s and Dalton played out a real attacking feast.

The two teams produced 16 goals between them in the Barrow and District Junior Football League encounter.

There was barely a moment of respite at either end of the field, as the likes of Dalton's Charlie Morgan and Alex Hustings, and Wanderers' Cohen Falloon and Ethan Steele helped themselves in front of goal.

It was a first game at under-11s level for the home side, with Wanderers' opening fixture being called off because of the weather, before they had a blank weekend.

With a squad split between half who have played together at Wanderers and previously at Furness Cavaliers, and half who are newer to the set-up, coach Paul Speirs hopes they will adapt well to the new nine-a-side format, played on a bigger pitch.

“Hopefully they'll adapt – there are some good players in there,” he said. “It's about getting used to the offsides and the other new rules.”

Most of the Dalton side have played together for the past three years, with one or two new faces joining the team as seasons have gone by.

They won the Barrow JFL Autumn Shield last season, and finished as runners-up in the Spring Shield, and coach Mike Hustings is hoping they will enjoy the move into the new format.

He said: “They're doing well and they're welcoming the change. We've got quite a few fit lads in our side, who like the open space and the bigger pitch.

“It means a lot of them get a lot more game-time as well. When you've got 13 in your squad, going from seven to nine-a-side does make a big difference.”
