BARROW-BORN marathon runner Chris Thompson's Rio Olympic dream appears to be over.

The 35-year-old went into the London Marathon needing to finish in the top-two British runners and cross the line in a time quicker than 2:14:00.

However, when he crossed the line in 2:15:05, he was the fourth Brit over the line, with the three in front of him all meeting the qualifying time standard.

Callum Hawkins (2:10:52), Tsegai Tewelde (2:112:23) and Derek Hawkins (2:12:57) are now in line to be the three men representing Team GB in Brazil.

Thompson has suffered a number of injuries in recent seasons since winning European Championships 10,000m silver behind Mo Farah in Barcelona in 2010.

A back fracture meant he was unable to perform at his best over the same distance in London 2012 and a severe Achilles injury disrupted his build-up to this season.
