GIRLS rugby union is booming in Millom thanks to a link-up between club, school and governing body.

Millom School have teamed up with the town's RU club and the Rugby Football Union to bring the sport to dozens of keen youngsters.

The fruits of their labour were shown as 11 pupils were picked for the Cumbria squad to take on Northumberland at Vale of Lune last weekend.

Bethany Pattinson – who had trials with the North of England last season - Chloe Procter, Jessica Fisher, Emily Floyd, Olivia Sykes, Kyhanna Herdman, Elise Gill, Lauren Fisher, Grace Hulse, Mia Dobson and Gretta Proctor were all picked by the county selectors.

The team are coached with help from Millom RUFC and hold weekly after-school training sessions – with numbers attending at times over the past year outnumbering those at the Millom RU senior sessions.

The club themselves also have a successful girls team as part of their junior structure, training once a week as well in good numbers, and the sport is booming among the teenage girls in the area.
