MILLOM took glory in dramatic fashion after an intense Barrow and District Junior Football League Under-nines Autumn Cup final.

Having battled through group stages and semi-finals, Millom faced off against Walney Island for the trophy at Furness College.

Watched by a large and enthusiastic crowd, despite the cold and damp conditions, the teams produced a high standard of football and matched each other blow for blow.

Millom had come through the group stages of a 12-team competition with a perfect record of three wins from three matches and having netted 22 goals.

Walney were likewise impressive, their trio of triumphs coming with 14 goals scored and just two conceded.

After a comprehensive 10-1 semi-final success over Hawcoat Park, Island would have been hopeful, while Millom were made to battle hard to egde past Furness Cavaliers 2-1 and reach the final.

Both teams contributed to a fantastic final. Millom went 1-0 up but Walney continued to play entertaining football and never gave up.

Both teams had decent chances, but with a few minutes to go Walney equalised and took the game to dribbled penalties. This format sees each team with chances to score, with a player dribbling from the centre spot and the keeper allowed to move from his line, rather than the usual spot-kick from eight yards.

Millom came out eventual winners, converting two of their dribbled penalties, while Walney could not take their chances.

The Autumn Shield final saw Holker Old Boys Eagles and Ulverston Rangers on the 3G surface, both having finished third in their group and beaten runners-up in the semi-finals.

Unfortunately for Holker, Ulverston started like a house on fire and were 2-0 up after a couple of minutes.

This was a setback the Eagles could not quite manage to recover from and they were always chasing the game, with Ulverston playing plenty of fast attacking football and running out convincing winners.

Mike Moorby, of the Furness Referees Society, refereed both games well, making sure all players competed in good spirits.

Both sets of sides were congratulated and presentations were made to all four teams. The Ulverston Rangers captain lifted the Autumn Shield and the Millom Juniors captain held aloft the Autumn Cup.
