LOW Furness took the honours in the second Haverthwaite Small Schools tournament.

The Urswick pupils overcame seven other sides to lift the trophy at Ulverston Leisure Centre.

Pitch issues meant the event was moved from its home at Haverthwaite, but the 3G pitches proved the perfect venue for some entertaining football.

The tournament saw Penny Bridge, Lindal and Marton, Ireleth, Pennington, Burlington, Broughton, Church Walk and Low Furness schools taking part.

They were split into two groups, playing each other once, with the top two in each group then being organised into another group to battle for the trophy and the other four teams contesting the shield.

Low Furness won the trophy and Penny Bridge took the shield after an entertaining afternoon.

Organiser Graham Carrick, from Penny Bridge, said: “I started to organise the event to get more small schools to play competitive football.

“With teachers being very busy, the traditional style of playing regular matches after school is difficult and, with our notoriously difficult weather, it can mean that regular football becomes hit and miss.

“Getting everyone together to play on one afternoon seemed to be a logical solution.

“All the teams played well, showing excellent individual and team skills with the right attitude.

“Changing the venue was actually a blessing in disguise as, due to the excellent facilities, we now hope to make this a termly event and bring regular competitive football for our local small schools.”
