LINDAL and Marton School stuck it to the opposition with a golden display of hockey at Ulverston Leisure Centre.

The primary school's Quicksticks team took the honours to win the Furness Schools final in golden goal extra-time on a crisp winter's day on the artificial pitch.

Lindal and Marton – who had won through to the area finals from the Dowdales cluster – were one of nine schools battling it out for honours.

Each of them had already proven their mettle at Quicksticks Hockey – played in three four-minute periods on a small pitch, with four players from a six-strong squad in action during each period.

Parents and teachers watched from the sidelines as Yarlside Academy, St George’s, Dane Ghyll, Holy Family, Chetwynde, Dalton St Mary’s, George Romney, Lindal and Marton and Low Furness battled it out.

Schools were split into three groups, with the winner of each group and the best second-placed team overall going through to the semi-finals.

Lindal and Marton, Yarlside, Dane Gyhll and Holy Family were the best quartet, with Dane Ghyll and Lindal and Marton progressing through to the final.

The showdown between the top two sides was a close affair, with both teams battling for top spot.

At the end of normal time the match was tied at 3-3, so the golden goal was introduced, with the next team to score declared the winners.

Lindal and Marton soaked up a promising Dane Ghyll attack and countered in quick fashion to net the winning goal.

Both teams progress through to the Cumbria Schools Games final next year, where they will represent Furness against Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakes.

Furness School Games organiser Oliver Carswell was pleased with how the competition went, and said: “It was a fantastic morning with lots of children taking part in a tough competition, but predominately having fun and enjoying themselves.

“The level that these boys and girls can play at is scary. Some of the hockey played was amazing, the players and teachers who coached them deserve a lot of credit.

“Considering the competition was only the third one they had done, they did a cracking job. I am very happy with the two teams who are going through to the Cumbria Final, they will represent our area very well.”

Carswell also added his thanks to Furness College for supplying the officials for the finals.
