THROUGHOUT 2017, South Cumbria's young sports stars have been excelling – and now is the chance for them to gain more recognition.

The Mail sports desk wants you to help us pick some worthy winners for our 2017 South Cumbria Sports Awards.

There are two prestigious awards up for grabs for under-18s with the winners being unveiled and trophies handed out at a special presentation night early in the new year.

We are looking for a Junior Sportsperson of the year and a Junior Team of the year, based on performances during 2017.

In the former category, Ulverston goalkeeper Anderson had an unforgettable year between the sticks as he helped England Under-17s win the World Cup in India.

The Manchester City youngster also made his Champions League youth debut and has been a regular for his club and national side throughout the past 12 months.

Aimee Everett is another England footballer, featuring for the under-17s in their European Championships qualifiers as well as signing for Liverpool Ladies.

Table tennis ace Ben McDonald has enjoyed success in regional and national competitions; while judo’s Harvey Burns has become a regular in the England squad and in international tournaments.

Wheelchair basketball ace Tyler Baines helped Cumbria to more national glory; Windermere sailor Teddy Ferguson guided his boat to British titles; and martial artist Ella Comish was back on the international stage.

Contenders for the junior team prize include Ulverston Victoria High School’s orienteering team, who were crowned British champions and who finished as world silver medallists.

Their school-mates in the tabel cricket team made county history as they reached the national finals of the Lord's Taverners competition.

Dalton RLFC under-16s claimed a North West Youth League and Cumbria Cup double, while the St Bernard's School Year 9 RL team made it to the semi-finals of the national schools competition.

There are sure to be many more names and teams who come to mind – and voting by the awards panel will only take place once they have all nominations have been submitted, so no-one will miss out.

Individuals must come from within the Mail’s circulation area, which stretches from Grange-Over-Sands in the south to Holmrook in the north, from Barrow-in-Furness in the west to Ambleside in the east. Teams must be based in the area.
