BARROW AFC played host to some of the top junior footballers from South Cumbria and beyond at the Holker Street Sixes tournament.

Close to 50 teams from under-eights up to under-12s stepped out at the home of the Bluebirds for a day of fun action.

The competition, sponsored by JF Hornby, who donated medals, trophies and certificates for all age groups, saw the under-eights and under-nines compete on a wet morning, while the under-10s and under-12s enjoyed the afternoon sunshine.

The under-eights event was played as a non-competitive tournament, with competitions for trophies and plates at all other levels.

Elimination matches did not employ the penalty shootout format, but rather saw teams reduced from six-a-side to five-a-side to four-a-side and so on, every minute until a winner was scored. One match did still go to penalties after there were no goals with just two players left on each team.

Watched by parents, grandparents and supporters from the terraces and main stand, Kendal side Wattsfield won the under-nines competition, beating Furness Cavaliers in the final.

At under-10s, Holker Eagles defeated Kendal Colts to be successful and in the under-12s, Walney Island saw off Furness Cavaliers.

JF Hornby’s John Hornby and Tom Southward presented the trophies, certificates and medals across the day.
