TAKE a bow Jason Day, what a performance to round off the season’s major championships.

After the debacle of The US Open at Chambers Bay, where Day suffered from vertigo, the USPGA and Whistling Straits gave us a Championship that was fantastic and the golf played, especially in the hour period on Saturday ranks up there with the best.

As Jordan Spieth said, it was the best loss he’d ever had but what a season Spieth has had!

Justin Rose set the fourth lowest season total ever for all four majors – and didn’t win any, Rory McIlroy performed admirably on his return from injury and Tiger missed the cut.

We’re all left wondering if Tiger will ever get back to competing.

In my watching of golf I’ve seen the likes of Sandy Lyle, Seve, Ian Baker-Finch and David Duval fall from grace and I’m beginning to wonder now if we’ve seen the last of him in the winners circle. (He’ll win this week now!).

What’s left for the season? Well, there’s one more event before the FedEx play-offs in which Tiger needs to win to even make the qualifiers.

The Walker Cup is at Lytham in September and Solheim Cup in Germany to round off the ladies season, but with the professional seasons coming to a close we still have lots to play for at our clubs.

This weekend Mo Morrison is holding his Captain’s Day at Barrow Golf Club with a full field expected to enjoy the day, there’s the Furness Gents Open on Saturday also, and with club competitions at our other courses you have a packed weekend of golf to play.

Coming up for all golf fans too, Chequers Hotel and Barton Townley are hosting their Open at Furness Golf Club on September 4, with special guest, two-time major winner and ex-Ryder Cup captain Tony Jacklin. An event not to be missed.

Having been away for a couple of weeks, I’ve missed a few results but one I always look out for is the Hodson Trophy, as I played in it before turning pro.

The team event pits each local clubs’ best golfers against one another playing off scratch, and this year the Furness team came out victorious at Grange Fell Golf Club. Well done guys.
