MORE than 90 teams from across Cumbria descended on Tummerhill for Walney Island’s annual junior summer football tournament.

Matches were played out across eight age groups, with the under-sevens and under-eights on a festival basis – all teams playing five games and receiving a commemorative medal.

Furness Cavaliers landed two of the competitive trophies on offer, with hosts Walney, Britannia Pioneers and Dalton also coming out on top among the Barrow and District Junior Football League sides.

Workington Rangers continued their impressive run at the tournament as they became the only non-local team to triumph.

In the under-nines, Whitehaven AFC hit 11 goals in their four group games and looked well set.

However, the occasion seemed to get to them as they came unstuck against Cavaliers in the semi-final.

The other semi-final saw a remarkable penalty shootout win for Millom Juniors against previously unbeaten Hawcoat Park.

The Millom boys could not match their semi-final heroics and, as the final went into extra-time, a slightly fresher Furness Cavaliers took the first title of the day 4-3.

Cavs also triumphed at under-10s level, with their Whites team showing that getting off to a bad start should not hamper your chances of success.

The boys from Rampside Road lost their opening group game but showed great character to go on and knock out previously unbeaten Crooklands Casuals in the semi-final and then account for Kendal United Colts 1-0 in the final after extra-time.

Well-organised Workington saw off all-comers without conceding a goal at under-11s level.

They knocked out Vickerstown in the semi-finals and took on Ulverston Rangers Predators in the final for a third consecutive year.

The Predators could not repeat their performances in the local cup competitions, going down 4-0 as Workington took their respective age group trophy back up the A595 for the third year in a row.

In the under-12s, the host club finally registered a victory.

Local cup kings Furness Cavaliers were represented in both semi-finals, however league champions Walney and third-placed Holker Old Boys contested the final, with the Islanders putting in a strong performance to ensure a 3-0 victory.

At under-14s level, Britannia Pioneers brought two strong sides, and a derby in the final was always on the cards.

So it was, as Britannia Blues and Britannia Greens disposed of Hawcoat Park Sports Blues and Walney Island Yellows in the semi-finals.

A tense final was played out, with two even sides matching each other across the pitch.

However, a piece of free-flowing attacking football by the Greens resulted in the only goal of the final, with the management team happy to see both sides come through unscathed.

It could have been a similar story among the under-16s with Barrow JFL champions Holker putting in two strong sides.

However, surprise packages Millom Under-15s and Dalton topped the groups, followed by Holker and Walney Island Yellows U15s respectively.

With Dalton taking on Holker and Millom playing the Yellows in the semi-finals, the final was always going to be an under-16s v under-15s encounter.

Dalton again upset the odds with victory over Holker and, with Walney accounting for Millom after extra-time, the host club were dreaming of a second trophy.

It was not to be as Dalton rounded off the day with a well-deserved 1-0 victory to secure their first piece of silverware.

Walney Island FC thanked all visiting players, managers, clubs and supporters who attended the event and made it a success, as well as the club volunteers who helped in various capacities.

They also thanked tournament main sponsor Sellafield Contractors Group Charity Committee, as well as Dave Willan, Eastworth Limited, The Olde Ulverston Tea Room, Ulverston Window Systems, Day Cummins Limited, Early News Newsagents, The Bakery, Charming Angels, AK Roofing, CHB Joinery, Ridge Roofing, M&P Gadsden, ABJ Builders, Clearvision Tarot Reading, (NW) Heritage Construction and North Scale Community Centre for their sponsorship and support.
