Holker Old Boys U12s 2 Furness Cavaliers U12s 1

HOLKER Old Boys edged a closely-fought and exciting Furness FA Youth Cup final at Longlands Park.

Old Boys defeated KO Cup and Ulverston Hospitals Cup champions Furness Cavaliers in a keenly-contested encounter.

Chances were at a premium early on, with neither team creating any clear-cut openings.

One chance for Cavaliers brought a strong save from Holker keeper Finley Martin, who tipped the shot round his right-hand post.

After 10 minutes Holker took the lead as some strong interplay down the left-hand side from Harvey Salton saw him square to midfielder Max Dixon. He calmly slotted into the bottom right of the Cavaliers goal for 1-0.

Old Boys lost the influential Kian McDonald to injury, but he was replaced by the ever-dependable JJ Benson midway through the first half.

Cavaliers pushed for a first-half equaliser but Holker stood firm as strong tackling and superb heading from a resolute defensive line, well marshalled by captain Sam Johnston, meant they could not be breached.

Holker’s pressing game was typified by Henri Smith and Josh Jones and allowed the Cavaliers no time on the ball, ending in lost possession and passes going astray.

The Rampside Road side had several corners going down the Crooklands hill. But Holker stood firm, with great heading from Joe Lyness and his team-mates, ensuring they came to nothing.

Half-time came with the Stags leading 1-0.

The second half began with the majority of the play in the midfield area, before – 10 minutes into the half – Holker extended their lead.

Great forward play from Farryl Foster saw him slot past the Cavaliers keeper with an excellent finish to give Holker some breathing space.

Cavaliers pressed for a foothold in the game, but again Old Boys would not budge.

The breakthrough for Cavs came 10 minutes from time as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Joe McGladdery.

Joe Amison duly stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom left-hand corner to bring it back to 2-1 and make for a nervy finale.

Holker were tiring late on against the double cup winners, so the fresh legs of Bobby Steele helped keep the workrate up.

Cavs pressed for an equaliser, but Old Boys held out to take the cup back to Rakesmoor Lane to cap a fabulous team effort.
