Windermere 5 University of Liverpool 2

WINDERMERE men made a winning start to their North League Two (West) season with a deserved 5-2 victory over the University of Liverpool.

The Cumbria Cup holders showed the fitness from their extensive pre-season training and were too strong for the students.

Will Dolman (2), Harry Jackson (2) and Jake Sorrenson all found the net.

Mere are already in the top three, but travel to Wirral this weekend to play the always-tough West Derby.

Fylde 2nds 1 Windermere 2nds 8

A SLICK counter-attacking strategy worked to perfection for Windermere as defeated Fylde 8-1 in their opening North West Division Five North fixture.

Fylde pressed high only to be caught repeatedly on the break by man-of-the-match Aidan McDougall and Jamie Hill.

Mere led 3-1 at half-time and bagged five more goals as their hosts fragmented.

Scorers for the visitors were McDougall (2), Isaac Ravenhill (2) – including a spectacular reverse hit from just inside the D – Jeff Jackson (2), skipper Jason Balmer and Tom Scheiber.

Lancaster and Morecambe 4 Windermere Ladies 1

NEWLY-PROMOTED Windermere found themselves up against a lively and well-drilled Lancaster and Morecambe side in their Lancashire Central League Premier Division opener.

The hosts led 1-0 at the interval through a penalty-corner strike, but Mere came back, with Chloe Balmer, Lucy Hill and Kitty Brownell stretching the home side in midfield and Katie Harrison and Evie Turner doing well out wide, though not quite connecting with their crosses.

Lancaster and Morecambe scored again before Cat Drury reduced the arrears from a penalty corner.

A sustained spell of attacks brought the hosts two more goals as Mere were overloaded in defence.

Mere will regroup and play Longridge at home on Saturday.
