HAWCOAT Park emerged victorious in the closely-contested Barrow AFC Community Sports under-10s futsal tournament.

Just two points separated the top four at the conclusion of the games at Chetwynde School.

Hawcoat edged out second-placed Walney Island Waves for the top honours, with Furness Cavaliers taking third and Crooklands Casuals narrowly missing out on a top-three finish in fourth.

“It was a great tournament in itself and there were a few upsets this year,” said Barrow AFC Community coach Brad Hubbold, who helped oversee the tournament with Joshua Jones.

“The parents and coaches were fantastic. It's great credit to the coaches because they just wanted them to play football, and get the ball down and play. There was no trying to kick it as far as you can and chase, and it's great to see.

“Because in the winter they have a big break until March, the kids don't play, so it gives them something to do just after Christmas and they want to get back playing football.

“Futsal is a bit different – it's indoor, it's warm and even with good facilities elsewhere, it's going to be cold outside and not nice for them. Also, it gets them playing football and teaches a little bit about another way of football.”

The futsal tournament is set to return next year during the Barrow and District Junior Football League winter break, while many of the teams and players will be back in action outdoors at AFC's Holker Street Sixes in May.
