Hawcoat Park U14s 3 Walney Island Blues U14s 1

HAWCOAT finally lifted silverware after so often being the bridesmaids to Walney this season.

After two cup final defeats and a runners-up spot in the Barrow and District Junior Football League, Park triumphed at the fourth time of asking to lift the Ulverston Hospitals Cup.

Returning to Holker Street – the scene of a penalty shootout loss in the Furness FA Cup final and a an extra-time defeat in the KO Cup final – Hawcoat were able to break their hoodoo.

The game was again a tight affair, with both sides stuck in from the off, cancelling each other out with solid defending in the first 15 minutes.

Midway through the first half, the ball was won by Lewis Woodend in middle of the park for Hawcoat, and he slotted it through to Morgan Trellore.

From the edge of the area, Trelore drove a fantastic shot into the top corner top put his side 1-0 up.

Walney pressed for an immediate response and put Hawcoat under pressure, forcing a corner through good work from Rio Corkill.

Park cleared well through Mackenzie Rushton, and just before the break the ball broke free from centre midfield. Harry Smith found Trellore down the right wing, where he was fouled just few yards from corner flag.

Kane Fleming swung in a great ball to the far post, where Woodend headed home unmarked for a 2-0 lead.

Walney started to press in the second half. Strong tackling from Taylor Gill set them up and they saw Ryan Wilson was upended 30 yards out. The resulting free-kick from Gill was just over the bar.

As the Game opened up, more chances were created by both sides.

Hawcoat broke down the right, and Fleming and Hayden Sue combined well, resulting in Fleming crossing in and Adam Allsop drilling in a volley past Walney goalkeeper Rory Hampson for a 3-0 lead.

Walney pressed to get back in the game, and five minutes later Gill had an excellent run past two players towards the Hawcoat area and drilled a shot beyond Oscar Jones to cut the deficit.

The game was end-to-end now, with excellent defending from Walney's Luke Broadfoot and Ethan Broadfoot, while Jack McKechnie and Corey Fittes held firm for Hawcoat.

Walney pushed, but time was not on their side as Hawcoat ran out winners in a third excellent contest between the sides in as many finals.
