HOMEGROWN players triumphed at a junior football tournament after a nail-biting period of extra time saw them bag the winning goal.

GSK Ulverston Rangers under-12s overcame a stiff challenge from Hawcoat Park Hawks to secure the silverware in a tense final.

The team had won three of their four qualifying games – including one against local rivals Swarthmoor FC – before powering past Vickerstown FC in the semi-finals.

Coach Mike Friars said: "A lot of thanks must go to the committee and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to put on a fantastic tournament. Without them these events just do not happen.

"Also a big thanks to all participating teams for making it a thoroughly enjoyable day with some great football on display.

"The team performed brilliantly, and were worthy winners. It was just reward for all the hard work they have put in during the pre-season period."

The day-long tournament saw 38 teams from under-sevens through to under-12s compete.

After days of rain, the sun finally made an appearance – which meant hundreds turned out for the event.

A club spokesman said: "It was a fantastic day with perfect weather and a great turnout.

"The feedback was very positive and everybody enjoyed the day with all teams, coaches, players, supporters and organisers playing a big part in its success.

"A special big thank you to Sarah Young, our secretary for all her hard work."

The results for the finals in each age category were:

Under-sevens: Winners – Westgate Wanderers.

Under-10s: Swarthmoor 2 Hawcoat Park Minions 0.
