FURNESS’S crown green bowling youngsters found the going tough in the second rounds of matches in the Federation of Crown Green Bowls Junior League.

Furness and Furness A were made to battle hard in the David Kay-sponsored competition at the Botanic Gardens Bowling Club in Southport.

They found hosts Ormskirk and Heavy Woollen, from the Dewsbury area, difficult opponents, with the former fielding a team with an average age of 14-and-a-half – two years older then Furness.

Furness A fielded eight-year-olds Amelia Massey Holmes and Harry Preston, nine-year-old Leni Brown Regan and 10-year-old Jeck Preston only averaged 10-and-three-quarters.

Experience showed as Ormskirk topped the group, while Heavy Woollen and Furness were separated by a single point.

Four Furness players, Jayden Reilly, Ethen Lowden, Sam Naylor and Jack Brannon, won twice, with Reilly picking up the player-of-the-match award.

Brothers Patrick and Alex McCormack picked up a win each, while – despite not reaching 21 in any of their games – Shawn Fisher and Rohan Massey Holmes gave a good account of themselves.

Furness A had three double winners in Preston, Jack Last and Josh Smith.

It was Preston who took the man-of-the-match award on his debut.

None of the other youngsters managed a win, but had a great day’s bowling in sweltering conditions in the gardens setting.
