FURNESS Cricket Club came out on top against Thwaites in the battle of the top two junior teams in the Barrow and District Table Tennis League.

The  sides met in the Tom Dixon Handicap Cup final at Hawcoat Park Sports Club, with both making their debut appearances in the final.

Having already secured promotion to Division One next season, the Furness trio of Ryan Cotton, Ben McDonald and Matty Rigg were hoping for success to finish their season on a high.

Despite giving the Thwaites trio of Scott Barker, Sam Huddleston and Jack Cullen favourable starts in the handicaps, the Furness lads came out 5-2 winners, with Cotton claiming one match and McDonald and Rigg each taking two apiece.

Rigg was awarded the player-of-the-final prize and also won the league's Junior Player-of-the-Year gong.

In addition to their league success, the Furness trio had a good Cumbria Schools competition, with Cotton being runner-up in the under-19s and reaching the semi-finals of the under-16s.

McDonald won the under-13s and was runner-up in the under-16s.

Rigg reached the semi-finals of both the under-16s and under-19s event.
