Furness Rovers U15s 3 Atherton Town U15s 2

A RYAN Fagan double and a goal from Hugh McParland earned Furness Rovers the Lancashire Cup after a thrilling final at the county FA headquarters at Leyland.

Atherton Town, who could boast several players who had attended Manchester City’s academy, were shocked when Rovers capped a fine start by taking an early lead with a goal from McParland.

Fagan added a second shortly afterwards, but by half-time Atherton had pegged it back to 2-2.

Having wiped out the deficit, Atherton started the second half the brighter and were soon pushing for a third, but Rovers dug deep and withstood the pressure.

With just 10 minutes left, Fagan broke the deadlock, hitting the third goal which proved to be the winner.

Rovers had their chances to make the victory more emphatic, but the Atherton keeper denied them twice.

Having reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals in recent years, this was the crowning moment for Furness Rovers, who were backed by a large group of travelling supporters.

The Rovers lads were grateful for the support they received from other Barrow teams who travelled down – something which epitomises the great spirit of the local league.
