FURNESS Cavaliers Whites sailed into the wind and emerged triumphant in the Barrow and District Junior Football League Under-10s Autumn Cup.

Cavaliers were crowned champions after three months of action disrupted several times by the weather.

They overcame Hawcoat Park Dynamos 5-0 in the final on the 3G pitch at Furness College – where a gale typical of the conditions players have had to adapt to in recent weeks made itself known.

They were joined in the winners circle by Holker Old Boys Eagles, who took the Autumn Shield following a tight 1-0 success against Hawcoat Park Hawks.

Both finals were played in a howling wind and had large crowd watching. Considering the conditions, the standard of football was high.

Young referee Sam Wager officiated both games well, making sure all players competed in good spirits, and all sides were congratulated for making it to the finals and were presented with medals.

The Autumn Trophy competitions started in October, with 17 sides split into three groups of four and one of five.

The groups were contested in a round-robin format, with Cavaliers Whites, Hawcoat Dynamos, Crooklands Casuals and Vickerstown coming out on top and advancing to the Cup competition.

Second-placed teams Holker Eagles, Hawcoat Hawks, Ulverston Rangers and Walney Island battled it out in the Shield event.

Cavaliers Whites came through their semi-final 3-1 at Crooklands, while the Dynamos defeated Vickerstown 5-3.

In the Shield last four, Hawcoat Hawks were 3-2 victors over Ulverston, while Holker Eagles needed sudden death dribbled penalties to overcome Walney, after the match finished 3-2.

The under-10s competition follows a successful under-eights event, with the under-nines finals being played at Furness College this weekend.

The tournaments are a new initiative for the Barrow JFL, with spring versions planned for later in the season.
