EVERTON manager Roberto Martinez praised referee Lee Mason for taking swift action after a reported incident of spectator racism during the Premier League side's FA Cup win at Carlisle.

It came after Arouna Kone fired Everton into an early lead at Brunton Park, setting the visitors on the way to a 3-0 victory. Aaron Lennon added the second goal and Ross Barkley fired the third.

A public address system message announced any abuse would not be tolerated, and Cumbria Police issued the same message on Twitter, asking anyone with information to report it.

Mason spoke to Martinez about the abuse aimed at Everton players.

"I thought it was dealt with in a very good manner," Martinez told BT Sport.

After speaking to Carlisle boss Keith Curle, it was agreed there should be a warning to spectators.

"We agreed to make an announcement. I thought the referee was very good in how he dealt with that," Martinez said.

"It was just a reaction, something that we don't want to see. It was just a reaction to the celebration of the goal and that was it. It would be wrong to highlight such a moment in an enjoyable footballing festivity."

Cumbria Constabulary is investigating allegations of racist behaviour directed towards football players in Carlisle United's FA Cup fourth round tie with Everton.

Officers are making enquiries and the force is asking for those with information to get in touch.

Superintendent Justin Bibby said: "We are investigating allegations of racist behaviour directed towards Everton players following the first goal.

"Hate crime will not be tolerated in this county and any allegation will be fully investigated.

"We ask that anyone with information makes contact with police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and ask to speak to an officer from Durranhill Police Station or alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
