STEVE Eilbeck gets another crack at winning a major title this weekend when he fights for the English Northern Region amateur 60kg category crown.

Eilbeck recently fought for the North West divisional Senior ABA Elite Championship but lost his 60-64kg category bout to Danny Wright of Centurions in Salford.

Now the Brook Street brawler gets a another chance of earning a belt at Liverpool Echo Arena, in what will be a busy weekend of action at the venue, with the English Boxing Elite National Championships quarter-finals, semis and finals taking place.

“It’s a chance for Steve to get a belt,” said Barrow ABC coach Jeff Moses. “If he wins he gets a chance to defend it against the Southern Area title winner.”

The national English Boxing Elite Championships, now in their 129th year, will follow last year’s popular revamped format, which saw the men and women’s finals held as part of the same tournament.

The competition features six reigning champions and seven members of GB Boxing’s elite Podium squad.

Former Barrow ABC junior Ryan Watson’s pro career began with victory.

The 29-year-old welterweight or super lightweight from Ulverston beat veteran Jason Nesbitt over six rounds in Bolton last the weekend.

Watson is one of two local boxers to have taken the pro ticket recently under the tutelage of former professional Kieran Farrell, the other being Callum Pearson of Barrow.
