BEN McDonald tasted double success with victory in the cadet and junior competitions at the Lancashire Closed Table Tennis tournament.

The Furness Cricket Club player was crowned double champion as club-mates Matthew and Rebecca Rigg both came home with runners-up trophies.

The competition, for players who live in Lancashire or who participate in the Lancashire Cadet League, was keenly contested, with entrants from across the county.

After negotiating their way through the groups, the knockout stages and the semi-finals, McDonald and Matthew Rigg met in the junior final – an under-18s competition, with both Barrow players just 14.

In a see-saw five-set battle, McDonald won the decider to take the title 3-2. The duo put on an entertaining and nail-biting final, supported by a knowledgeable audience.

In the cadet boys (under-15s) competition, they both negotiated the groups and were set to meet in the final again.

However, Rigg ran out of steam in the quarter-finals and lost in five sets.

McDonald went on to play Toby Ellis in the final, and ran out a 3-0 winner.

Rebecca Rigg played in the cadet girls competition in a round-robin format.

In effect, the last game was a final, as the 12-year-old Furness players and her opponent had won all their games before that point.

Rigg lost the final 3-1 in a match which could have gone either way.

The players and Furness CC coach John Harrison thanked sponsor Cumbria Autos for their continued support.
