A GROUP of budding young cricketers had a field day when they were tutored by experts at Chetwynde School.

As well as enjoying games of Kwik Cricket, 56 boys and girls from the Barrow school were also shown many of the skills needed for the popular summer sport.

The two-hour session was overseen by cricket development officer Jake Woods, along with women’s coach Kirby Linton and Barrow CC pro Kaustubh Pawar and his team-mate Javed Khan.

And it was fun all the way for the Year 5 and 6 pupils who were taught how to bat and bowl as well as learning the arts of throwing and catching.

In order to keep the enthusiastic youngsters on their toes the group was split into two, with one section taking part in a game of Kwik Cricket while the other enjoyed the skills sessions.

The aim of the sessions were to get more youngsters interested in the summer sport and also to attract them to Barrow CC.

Woods said: “It went really well, it was a transition activity to hopefully get more Chetwynde pupils playing at Barrow CC.

“We split them up into two groups, me and Kirby ran some games with them while the two pros did skills with them and then we swapped over. It was a successful event.”

Barrow CC and Chetwynde have a link-up said Woods, who has now completed six sessions at the school. He is hoping Barrow CC’s junior section will now benefit from an influx of new players as a result.

He said: “At the end we gave out golden tickets, with information of when Barrow train so hopefully we will get more kids playing cricket down there.”
