Britannia Pioneers U14s 2 Furness Cavaliers Blues 1

BRITANNIA Pioneers completed a league and cup double with victory over Furness Cavaliers.

The Brit added the Barrow and District KO Cup to the league title and avenged their Ulverston Hospitals Cup final defeat at the hands of the same opponents in the process.

The match between the top two sides in the league on a sun-drenched Holker Street saw Pioneers on the front foot at the start.

A neat ball inside from Liam Clark allowed Jack Litherland to have the game’s first strike on goal after 10 minutes, only to pull his low shot wide of the left-hand upright.

But the Brit did not have to wait long to nudge in front. Following a free-kick just outside the box, it was Ben Spencer who rose the highest to direct the ball into the back of the Furness Cavaliers net.

Confidence seemed to flow through the Brit’s play, as they attempted to drive home their dominance of the early exchanges.

Max Green was also introduced into the game on 15 minutes, following the withdrawal of the bright Brodie Luxon.

However, that dominance was wiped out when a throw from the Brit goalkeeper Jay Barker was hooked back forward by the ever-alert Jordan McGarry.

It was then that Moses Helliwell pounced, and his quick feet and thought allowed him to clip the ball over the advanced goalkeeper and into the empty net for the equaliser.

Both teams met the game head-on in the following exchanges, with the next good chance coming on 25 minutes when McGarry rattled the Brit crossbar with a free-kick on the edge of the box.

With two minutes of the half left, neat interplay between Kodi Hammond, Will Maguire and Tommy Dawson once again slipped Litherland in on goal.

With his first effort well saved by Cavaliers goalkeeper Will Hackett, Litherland quickly snapped up the rebound, only to be upended by Hackett, with the referee pointing immediately to the spot.

Green stepped up in confident style to dispatch the spot-kick down low to the keeper’s right, to give the Brit a 2-1 half-time lead.

Pioneers started the second half well, with three chances in quick succession.

A long ball from Callum Sharples was latched on to by Tommy Dawson, only for the striker to pull his shot just wide of the upright.

A neat pass from Hammond once again put Dawson behind the Cavaliers defence, but a difficult bounce and a stumble prevented a further strike at goal. Then, a strong left-footed strike dipped just over the Cavaliers crossbar as the Brit looked to extend their lead.

A succession of free-kicks and corners followed, taken by Ben Boulton-Cairns, which peppered the Brit penalty box.

Strong defending from Harrison Turner, Jamie Beddoes and Sharples, under instructions from goalkeeper Barker, prevented any clear efforts on goal.

Battles continued across the park, with Ben Spencer and the cultured Maguire mixing things together well and George Hornby and Lewis Waterson looking dangerous.

With only five minutes remaining, a high bouncing ball in the Brit penalty area allowed Helliwell to direct a looping header on to the top of the crossbar, before the ball was cleared once again.

With this died Cavaliers’ hopes of grabbing an equaliser, as the Brit stood tall together to see a thrilling game out.
