SWIMMERS from Barrow ASC made a flying start to the 2016 Cumbria Diddy League season.

The nine to 11-year-olds came out on top of eight teams from across the county in Carlisle.

Diddy League gives an introduction to competitive swimming to the youngsters, and Barrow’s team came through in style.

Led by coaches Alison Sharpe and Mandy Steele, the team led the way in the relay and individual 50m events to post a tally of 231 points – ahead of hosts Carlisle on 218 and Ulverston on 212.

The result followed on the back of last year’s success in the competition and from a positive outing in the south Cumbria friendly earlier in the year.

Diddy League team manager Steele said: “The kids were fantastic and the club is very proud of them.

“The dedication and commitment from all the swimmers was just outstanding.

“Our swimmers and coaches know they need to keep up the hard work to ensure future success.

“Training has already started in preparation for round two, with the hope to keep winning.”

Barrow ASC were awarded Swim 21 accreditation by national governing body the ASA in April for the 2016/17 period.
