YARLSIDE Academy are celebrating a year of sporting success across a range of disciplines.

The school’s footballers tasted glory in both the five-a-side and seven-a-side formats, taking the Dick McIntosh Cup and the Barrow Schools League title. The former was won by the school for the first time since 1985 and the latter followed success in 2011.

Elsewhere, their tag rugby outfit won the Barrow Schools tournament and finished third in Cumbria and their Year 4 boys and girls teams were on top in the Barrow Schools cross-country relays.

Yarlside’s gymnasts helped Furness dominate in the Cumbria School Games, as they followed up victories in the Furness finals at Key Step 1, 2 and 3 with triumphs in the younger two age groups in Penrith. They were also the runners-up in Key Step 3.

The school’s PE coordinator Mark Bland said of the footballers and gymnasts: “All of the children attend weekly football and gymnastics clubs held after school.

“We place an important emphasis on teaching the basic skills to the children. Once they have mastered these skills, they are given the opportunity to apply them to problem solving scenarios, challenges, drills and competition.

“We have a strong sporting heritage at Yarlside and this is something which we are very proud of.

“We take every opportunity to include the children in as many competitions as possible. It has been another successful year in school sport at Yarlside.”
