JORDAN Spieth won the Open in spectacular fashion at Royal Birkdale, but before he set foot on the first tee, two dozen keen Barrow golfers enjoyed their slice of the action at the famous old course.

Twenty-four young members of Barrow Golf Club had a day to remember on the Lancashire coast as they tasted the build-up to the major championship.

Organised by club member Dave Barker, and accompanied by club professional Paul Rawlinson, assistant Joe Mitchell, parents and members of the junior committee, the keen players were in town during the final practice day.

Thanks to former Barrow player Alan Hocknell – now senior vice-president of research and development at top golf manufacturer Calloway – the children's day got off to a wonderful start as they met European Ryder Cup star Thomas Pieters.

They also spent time in the Golf Foundation and HSBC Swing Zones, enjoying various games and tests of their skills, as well as following practice groups around the course as the world's best players prepared for action.

Mitchell said the day was a great success for the children, who enjoyed all aspects.

“We got there and we met with Thomas Pieters, got some photos taken and some autographs,” Mitchell said. “The kids were al full of smiles.

“After that, everyone did their own thing – some of them went to the practice ground, some followed a few groups, some stayed at the chipping green. They took it all in. They loved it.”
