BARROW Friday League’s best of the rest gave their league champions a real run for their money at the annual presentation night.

As teams and individuals were recognised for their achievements through the year, the champion billiards, snooker, darts and Welch Don sides stepped into action one final time at the British Legion.

Each of them faced line-ups of the best players from across the competition, with honours shared come the end of the night.

The night started with the British Legion’s successful billiards team victorious once again.

Legion captain Peter Johnson fell to defeat against Dave Kershaw, who forged ahead in the latter part of the game to take it 100-59.

Individual champion Allan Edmondson levelled matters against Josh Howarth. He set off with an exceptional 35 break and another 25 break to establish a-54 point lead.

Haworth was able to break out of single figures just before the end as he went down 100-11.

Kevin Quinn preserved the honour of the Legion with a win over David Holmes to seal the overall victory.

The game was level most of the way, though an 18 break by Quinn late on made the difference as he won 100-67.

Snooker champions Cottages Club could not emulate that feat for the champion sides, as they fell to a 2-1 loss.

Cottages set off well as John Tyerman took an early 30-10 lead against Paul Bennett with a 21 break and then went on to clear up the reds with a 26 break and a 56-10 win.

Soccer Bar’s Neil Myers overcame Cottages captain Dave Simpson, building his lead steadily through the game.

With four reds remaining, Simpson potted a couple of reds one with a pink, but still needing snookers and seeing the yellow disappear, could only concede at 57-15.

Aggregate winner Bill Burns took on Soccer Bar’s Alan Eaton in the decider, which was a close game all the way through to the black ball, which Eaton potted for the rest of the league to triumph.

There were no such problems for the Nautical darters, who swept aside their opponents 6-1. Captain Scott Hayton (140, 100) beat the Soccer Bar’s Mike Fletcher – despite the latter hitting a 180 – and John Quayle’s 59 knock-up sealed a second points against Soccer Bar captain Mike Edwards, both men hitting a ton in the encounter.

Dave Kershaw came back strongly to overcome Navy Club B’s Chris Kirkby and make it 3-0, before the match was wrapped up as Scott Hayton (121, 87 knock-up) overcame Navy A’s Ian Goodwin (140, 100) in an entertaining clash.

The other games were played to a finish and Craig Mansell from the Vickerstown Club gained a consolation win over John Quayle.

The other two games between Dave Kershaw and Cottages’ Alan Fraser and David Oakes and Soccer Bar’s Stuart Pearson went the Nautical’s way for a victory.

The select side did have success in the Welch Don, beating league champions Roose Cons 3-1.

First to finish with a 2-0 result were Sid Blackett and Brian Newby, from Navy Club A, as they beat Paul Bennett and Mike Irving.

Bob Taylor and John Rawlinson took a point for the champions with a comfortable 2-0 win over Cottages’ Mala McCoy and Dave Macmillan.

Navy A’s Brian Jones and partner were next to finish with a 2-1 success against Jimmy Johnson and John Warburton.

The deciding game between Peter Roberts and Ray Cooney and Ray Procter and Pat Kyle, from Navy B, went all the way to the end, with the Barrow Island boys coming out as 2-1 winners.
