BARROW AFC Community were out in force over half-term to deliver football coaching to youngsters on their school holidays.

The club’s coaches delivered four days of action in the sunshine at Chetwynde School.

Boys and girls aged between five and 11 were able to take full advantage of the summer-like conditions as they worked on their skills and had fun taking part in a variety of games.

Up to 45 children each day participated, and senior coach Marc McAloone had to make sure the heat did not sap them too much.

Games were adapted to have them running around less when the sun was at its zenith and also to use the slight slope on the Chetwynde fields.

He said: “Sometimes it makes it a little bit harder, because the kids can be too hot and they need to be hydrated, but you’ve got to have plenty of breaks and we managed that with games that mean they are still playing and moving, but they’re not running around at 100mph all the time.

“On one of the mornings, we played football where they were looking at passing – how they pass the ball and where they pass the ball – but they’re not running round in matches. We’re trying to improve their techniques, but not have them running round in the heat and getting too hot.

“They were able to play at their own speed and practice some different skills.

“It was quite good at Chetwynde, because there’s the hill and they have to think about the ball rolling down it, and we made a little course where they had to spin it round corners. It was all quite exciting really.”

There will be further Barrow AFC Community holiday courses taking place during the summer holidays.
