ASKAM seek to topple another high-flying National Conference Division Two side at Fallowfield Park tomorrow.

They host Leigh East, while Millom seek a maiden victory of the campaign at home to Hunslet Warriors.

Both Walney Central and Ulverston are on the road, while Hindpool go to Chorley in the North West Men’s League.

ASKAM v LEIGH EAST

(Fallowfield Park, 2.30pm)

BARRY Pugh and Dan Sayle are set to return for Askam as they bid to topple early National Conference Division Two pace-setters Leigh East.

East suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 36-4 last week at Thornhill, while the Villagers ended Bradford Dudley Hill’s winning run.

Work rules out Tom Goffatt, with Stu High rated doubtful with a foot injury.

Mike Wilson’s side go into the game with an air of confidence following last week’s fine 22-16 win, and the Askam boss said: “I was very pleased with the win over Dudley Hill.

“I thought our defence was brilliant against a side that had not been beaten.

“We were also very good in attack and, overall, I am satisfied with how we are going.

“We are only conceding around three or four tries a game, so I am happy with that.”

He added: “We know it will be a hard game this weekend. Leigh have always been a good side and only just missed out on promotion last year.

“We are all looking forward to what should be a hard game. We are firing on all cylinders and we need to keep the momentum going.”

Wilson is blessed by having a good squad this season and last week history was made as four sets of brothers were in the 17-man squad – Jamie and Tom Butler, Kristian and Mark Tyson, Joe and Sam Dowsett and Gary and Russ Bolton.

Askam have the second-best defensive record in the division, conceding 76 points so far.

MILLOM v HUNSLET WARRIORS

(Devonshire Road, 2.30pm)

THE Woollybacks hope to make it sixth time lucky in National Conference Division One as they take on Hunslet Warriors at Coronation Field.

Coach Tom Sibley is optimistic his side can get that vital first win of the season, and said: “We are down in numbers again, but we go into the game refreshed after a week off.

“Although we were beaten at then-leaders Oulton two weeks ago, we played very well in the second half and I’m sure the lads will take that second-half display into tomorrow’s game.

“It is still early days and, once we get that win, we can take off for the rest of the season.”

Ian Armstrong and Joe Shaw return for the clash with the South Leeds side, with Connor Sykes and Miles Harris also coming into contention. Work rules out Liam Brady.

While the Woollybacks were having a day off last week, the Warriors lost 32-12 at Normanton Knights.

ULVERSTON v WATH BROW HORNETS A

(Dragley Beck, 2.30pm)

ULVERSTON seek to put last week’s 38-6 Cumbria League defeat at the hands of Barrow Island behind them as they take on the Brow in the Cumbria Cup.

Kieron Chadwick, Liam High and Matt Storey are added to the squad, along with Sam Shepherd.

Due to injuries and work commitments, coach Phil Atkinson had yet to finalise the team.

He said: “We have so many out, but we will get on with it and look to make progress.

“I thought last week’s defeat was our worst performance so far this season. Our discipline was terrible – I don’t know where that came from, but we were well off the pace.

“We need to lay down a marker in this game, as we go to their place next Saturday for a league game.

“We have to make a big improvement on last week’s display, I hope it was just a one-off.”

GLASSON RANGERS v WALNEY CENTRAL

CENTS look to make it four wins from four in the Cumbria League when they visit a Glasson side with just one victory so far.

However, they must get 17 men on the bus if they are to be succesful.

Definitely out are Mike and Matt Elliott, Mike Whitehead, Carl McBain, and Dale Waite, while Brad Nicholls (hamstring) and Dave Warne (knee) are rated 50/50.

Coach Shaun Morrow said: “I am still ringing round to see who is available.

“We are without key players, so hopefully Nicholls and Warne will pull through.”

CHORLEY PANTHERS v HINDPOOL TIGERS

HINDPOOL head to Chorley with a squad once again hit by injuries and work commitments.

Four players do return, in the shape of Josh Archer, Lee Boyd, Scott McGuckin and Paul Rickleton, while the club are awaiting news on Mike Kummer and Brad Rowan before the team is picked.

Coach Phil Cubiss said: “It is still only early days and the players have turned up and put the work in this week, which suggests to me that they are eager to put things right.

“We will travel there with what we’ve got and give a good account of ourselves.

“Chorley have a big set of forwards that we will need to contain, but we have been focusing on our defence over the last couple of weeks, so hopefully that will pay off.”

l Roose Pioneers have conceded their Cumbria Cup first round game at Ellenborough due to a lack of players.
