EUROPE’S best met Askam’s finest as table tennis star Emily Bolton battled it out in Croatia.

The teenager was part of the England Junior Girls squad who finished 17th at the European Youth Championships in Zagreb.

Bolton featured alongside Tin-Tin Ho and Kate Cheer in the team event, but England struggled in the group stage as they were beaten by Sweden (3-2), Poland (3-0) and Germany (3-0).

That meant they could not progress to the play-offs for top positions, and they followed up with a 3-0 defeat by Serbia before picking up their first win against Finland, by a 3-0 scoreline as Bolton defeated Sofie Eriksson 3-0 (11-9, 15-13, 11-7).

That kick-started a run of good results as they beat Italy 3-0, with Bolton again enjoying a 3-0 success, this time against Veronica Mosconi (11-4, 11-8, 11-3).

The former Askam Village School and Dowdales pupil was defeated in her next match against Netherlands, but England won 3-1 to set up a play-off for 17th and 18th against the Czech Republic.

It was another 3-1 success for England, despite Bolton’s defeat to Katerina Cechova.

The Furness ace also competed in the individual event in Zagreb, but suffered disappointment in the singles, going out in the qualifying round, beaten 4-2 by Kastiaryna Vakhliayeva of Belarus (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7).

She and partner Alex Ramsden lost in the first round of the mixed doubles, 3-2 against a Belgian pair, while in the girls doubles, Bolton and Ho were beaten 3-2 by a Slovenian duo in the last 64.
