BOXING veteran Lee Kellett has his hopes set on becoming a two-weight champion.

The Askam fighter will take on journeyman Jody Meikle next month for the MBC heavyweight title.

Kellett, who has a pro career record of five wins, two draws and 10 defeats, has lost to Meikle twice before.

But he is confident he can make it third time lucky against the ‘One Man Riot’ when the two clash in Scunthorpe on Friday August 26.

The opportunity comes just a few months after the 37-year-old Kellett won his first professional title, knocking out Matthew Pepper in the sixth round of their eight-round WBU Europe Regional Championship bout.

Kellett said after that victory in Leeds he was calling it a day, but the lure of a shot at another title and the chance to gain revenge on Meikle has proved too much to resist.

“Although I was going to retire, I’ve been offered a chance to become a two-weight champion,” explained Kellett.

“I will be fighting Jody Meikle for the third time for the MBC heavyweight title after he beat the Malta superstar Billy Corito, when he took the title fight at the last minute in Malta.

“I think I should have beaten Jody both times I fought him, but I was the away fighter and never got the nod.

“I will be trying my hardest to get the win and become a two-weight champion.”

Kellett is hoping he will get some travelling support, saying: “It would be nice to have a few there cheering me on.”

Elsewhere, a pair of promising Furness Catholic ABC boxers performed well in defeat in the national pre-quarter finals of the national schoolboy and minors championships at The Lighthouse, Manchester. Representing the North West Region against Yorkshire, Lochlan Gosling and Xander Parramore both put in good performances but lost on points.

Michael Ryan of Furness CABC’s Team Ryan said: “Both boxers lost on points to strong opponents but it was a good learning experience for both boxers, who represented themselves and the club very well.”

Also taking part in the championships was Evan Jones who lost his national quarter-finals at Croxteth, Liverpool, against a very strong opponent from Salisbury ABC.

Added Ryan: “This was a very close contest with the home boy taking a narrow points decision.

“Evan’s opponent here went on to win the English and British Schoolboy title and Evan was on a par with him.”

l The club trains at the Lyceum Hall, Buccleuch Street, on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and are open to new members – both male and female and both junior and senior.

l Tickets for the Lee Kellett fight, at £12.50 each, are available directly from the boxer (07731 460492) or from Flexappeal Fitness (01229 434040).
