GEORGIA Stanway did exactly what England Women boss Phil Neville wanted from her after making a big impression on her debut in the 3-0 win over Austria on Thursday evening.

The 19-year-old from Barrow took her goalscoring form from club level with Manchester City, where she has netted seven goals in eight FA Women’s Super League appearances so far this season, to the international stage in the friendly in Vienna.

Having been handed her first senior start, Stanway made it 2-0 to the Lionesses from 12 yards out on 72 minutes after being set up by clubmate Nikita Parris.

She was one of three uncapped players in the squad along with fellow City player Ellie Roebuck and Chioma Ubogagu, who marked her debut with England’s opener, and Neville will have been pleased to see them stake a claim for more opportunities.

“People in football talk about giving youngsters a chance but Ellie and Georgia are in this squad on merit, not just because they are young,” Neville told the FA website.

“They are here to make an impact. I have said from the start that there is an opportunity for anyone to get into this squad.

“If players are performing well enough for their clubs then the door is open; and that’s exactly what has happened this time around with Ellie, Georgia and Chioma.

“All the players know a place in the World Cup squad is up for grabs so it’s all about taking your opportunities, making an impact and getting on board with the values and philosophies that we’re trying to implement.”

For her part, Stanway was delighted to carry on the goalscoring form she has shown at age-group level for England on her senior bow, simply posting to her Twitter account: “What a night!!”

The former Dowdales School pupil could well play a part again tomorrow when England take on world-ranked number nine Sweden in Rotherham.

The match at the 12,000-capacity New York Stadium is a sell-out and if Stanway impresses again, she would undoubtedly force her way further into Neville’s thinking for the rest of the season and potentially next summer’s World Cup in France.

Neville is likely to give some other members of his squad a chance against the Swedes, although he was not taking either the trip to Austria or tomorrow’s match lightly.

“These games aren’t friendlies,” said Neville, adding: “Every single player will get an opportunity to play.

“I want two wins; two good performances and the foundations now being built for the next eight months.”
