GEORGIA Stanway came off the bench to score twice for Manchester City as they thrashed West Ham United 7-1 in yesterday’s FA Women’s Super League game.

The 19-year-old from Barrow had been on the pitch barely three minutes before slotting home her first - and City’s fourth - of the match after coming on for Claire Emslie in the 69th minute.

It came after Nikita Parris, who also netted twice in the rout, intercepted a clearance from West Ham goalkeeper Becky Spencer and broke down the right followed by putting in a low cross for Stanway to slot home from six yards out with her first touch of the game.

Stanway’s second was a result of some individual brilliance, with the striker picking up the ball just inside the penalty area and showing good footwork to deceive Hammers captain Gilly Flaherty and fire home to make it 6-0 with 10 minutes remaining.

Caroline Weir, Tessa Wullaert and Steph Houghton - on her 100th WSL appearance - got the others for the hosts, with Esmee de Graaf netting a late consolation for West Ham.

Stanway’s haul took her goal tally to six for the season so far in all competitions and team-mate Parris is eager for the team to keep this sort of scoring form up.

“We’ve had some slow starts, and that’s just been from not concentrating going from the warm up into the game, we needed to concentrate from the start, because in other games we’ve been 2-0 down and that’s obviously not great for us,” Parris told Manchester City Women’s official website.

“I think you’ve got to understand in this league, in one moment there could be a goal against you, and then you could be 3-1 up and they have the momentum, and they have a spell in the game, so you’ve got to keep fighting.

“So then, the fourth came, the fifth came, and at 6-0 we were comfortable, and as I said if you get too comfortable they can put one in behind you and they can score, so you really do have to keep concentrating.”

The win was enough to briefly put City top of the WSL standings, although Arsenal’s 5-0 win at Chelsea and Birmingham City edging out Bristol City 1-0 in the later kick-offs saw Nick Cushing’s women drop back down to third by the end of the day.

City are just one point behind the top two though on 11 after five games, with the Gunners leading the way on goal difference from Birmingham.

Stanway and her team-mates are back in action next Sunday when they make the trip to face early strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion, followed by hosting Reading in front of the BT Sport cameras on Friday, October 26.
