AFTER smashing in her first goal of the season last Thursday, Georgia Stanway is targeting Manchester City’s Women’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid tomorrow night.

The 19-year-old striker from Barrow opened the scoring for City in their 4-0 victory at Everton with a brilliant first-time effort from outside the area, one of the strikes of the season so far in the FA Women’s Super League.

It is already shaping up to be a big campaign for Stanway, who impressed with England in last summer’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup, where she scored six goals in helping her country to third place.

Now she has her eyes on the second leg of City’s round of 32 tie against Atletico, after a late equaliser by the Spanish champions forced them to settle for a 1-1 draw in Madrid.

Stanway said: “They’re a very strong side and we held out for the 89 minutes that we did and it was just unfortunate to let that one in so late.

“It almost felt like a loss but at the same time we have to look at the fact that we scored an away goal which potentially is an advantage.

“Our first round of the Champions League previously haven’t always been this difficult so to play a good side like this is really good and it’s a test of who we are and what we can do.

“Hopefully in the Champions League we can go that one step further this season.”
