MATT Elkington and Beth Harrison made it a double for Ambleside AC as they took wins in the Rusland Show & Sports race from Whitestock Meadow.

Elkington took the overall win in a record time of 29mins 59secs around the 4.9-mile fell and trail course, which featured 1,015 feet of ascent.

He was over two minutes clear of runner-up Matthew Fellbaum (Edinburgh University, 32.12), with Elkington’s club-mate Jack Wright third and 34 seconds behind Fellbaum.

Harrison matched that feat in the ladies’ category by setting a new female record for the course of 34.56.

She was followed across the line by the Black Combe Runners duo of Hollie Orr (37.29) and Sarah Pike (40.24).

Other BCR finishers in a race which doubled as a counter for the club championship were Edward Gleadowe (33.13), Matt Rooke (34.40), John Evason (39.47), Peter Coupe (39.57), Peter Tayler (42.05), Patrick McIver (42.29), Simon Austin (43.39), John Millen (44.07), Steve Wathall (44.23) and Chris Roberts (47.13).

A shorter 1,75-mile, 560ft ascent race took place too, with Elkington and Harrison triumphing again in 12.39 and 15.14 respectively.

Black Combe members taking part were Rooke (15.01), Orr (15:25), William Ross (17.31), Pike (17.35), Coupe (17.40), Susan Ross (19.51) and Hazel Tayler (23.51).

Elsewhere, Wathall clocked a respectable time of 1hr 4mins 44secs at the midweek Shipman Knotts fell race in the Kentmere Valley near Staveley.

Karl Fursey was the sole BCR member taking part in the Gosforth 10k road race earlier this month and completed the course in a time of 1:01.01.

Jonathan Bailey claimed his highest finish in the fell race at the Egremont Crab Fair, coming home 16th overall in 1:20.29.

The next club championship counter road race is the Barrow or Fell Foot Parkrun on any Saturday until December 8.

However, the best result from each venue is the only one which will count for any club members attempting more than one.

The Allithwaite 8, near Grange-over-Sands, on Saturday, November 8 is the next longer event on the calendar for BCR.

It takes in a mixture of surfaces along the eight-mile course, of which around two-thirds is made up of trail, field, fell, limestone pavement and some of Cartmel racecourse, with the rest of it being on the road.

Before then, however, the Orton fell race takes place from Orton Primary School at 2pm on Saturday, September 29.

Entry for this race is only available on the day.
