JACK Lord ran in a hat-trick of tries to help Hawcoat Park A score a convincing 65-7 victory over Burnley 2 in their home North West Intermediate League and cup double-header.

It was Lord who got the hosts up and running after just seven minutes after the pack had won a scrum against the feed, with Lewis Sayle providing the pass to send the winger over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Two minutes later, Corey Doughty broke through and passed to Chris Milby, who in turn set up Benji Platt for a second unconverted score.

Another scrum won against the feed led to Jason Milby slicing through for a try, this time converted by Sayle, followed by centre partner James Armitstead streaking away to score.

Chris Milby’s ball steal from the opposition scrum-half led to him scoring and Lord returned the ball for a try straight from the restart, with Sayle’s second conversion of the afternoon making it 34-0 to Hawcoat at the break.

There was little let-up from the Maroon and Whites when play resumed, although it was Burnley who got on the board first in the second half after a clearance kick was charged down for a try, along with the visitors adding the conversion.

But on 48 minutes, some good inter-play from Hawcoat led to Lord going over for his third try of the match.

The home side then began to put their replacements to good use and on the hour mark, another strong push at a scrum saw Scott Garnett feed Peter Matthews for an unconverted try.

Then fly-half Sayle scored and converted his own try following a powerful run from Chris Milby five minutes later.

Paul Woodburn, Ryan Brown an Mike Gibson were putting in some good forward drives and working hard in defence with the whole of the forward unit.

Rodney Odondi finished in the 70th minute after most of the team had their hands on the ball and the final score came from 70 metres out three minutes from time, finished off by Plat. Both scores were converted by Sayle

Hawcoat now face Bolton 3 in the second round of the Shield on October 6.

In Cumbria League Two, Furness lost 67-12 away to Aspatria Eagles after making the trip up the coast with just 12 players and borrowing two of the opposition’s squad.
