FURNESS AND DISTRICT LEAGUE
IN division three of the Furness and District Bowling League, sponsored by South Lakeland Financial Consultants, only one of the top three sides — West Shore — ended up with a win.
With that result West Shore moved into top spot, ahead of West Mount A and Glaxo A, who both have a game in hand on the leaders.
West Shore — with Geoff Batte and Brian Chelton, both 21-9, Pat Fogharty and Dave Crozier leading the way — beat Police A 9-5.
The Police good winners in Graham Slater, Stan Haworth and Daniel Sharpe.
King Alfred B were another side to gain a 9-5 victory, beating West Mount A.
Steve Belcher, 21-6, was in top form, well supported by Bill Jonson, Maurice Dennis and Keith Sewell.
Best for the visitors were Bob Ward, 21-9, and Norman Parker.
North Scale A shared the games with Glaxo A, but took the aggregate by five points and the game 8-6.
Ian Dalton, 21-4, Stuart Walker and John Roden were in form for the home side, as were Paul Clark, 21-3, John Davidson, 21-9 and John Benson for the work’s side.
Hawcoat Park B moved into fourth place following a comfortable 10-4 victory over Co-op B.
Good single figure wins for the work’s side came from Derek Hurley, 21-9, Jimmy Addison, 21-7, Denis Cubiss, 21-9 and Mike Kittley.
Ken Stirzaker, 21-9, replied well for the visitors.
Walney Park A are still looking for their first win of the season. This week they went down 10-5 against Barrow Island A.
On song for the Park were Paul Cargan, Roger Quayle and Les Thorne, as were Jack Chaloner, 21-8, Tom Elliott, Scott Eastham and Frank McKechnie for the Islanders.
Lowly West Mount B – with Ken Horner 21-9, John Cross and Keith Nixon in good form – were beaten 10-5 by Askam A in a very close game. The village side gained the aggregate by four chalks due to good wins by Stuart Currie, 21-9, Jack Knowles and Mike Scudamore.
In division two, Dalton Cricket lead the table from Askam, with the village side having a game in hand.
The Cricketers played two games this week against the same team, defeating Red River 12-2 and 12-3.
Seven of the members gained double wins, the best coming from Stan Jones, John Sharples, Roy Whatley and Dave Kent.
The Bridgegate side’s points were scored by Stuart Aspinall, Bob Lancaster, Bill Davis and Neil Aspinall.
Askam defeated lowly Dalton Cons B 12-2. Seven of the side scored single figure wins, the leading ones coming from Ken Knowles 21-4, Dave Kavanagh 21-6, Arthur “park keeper” Foster 21-5, Chris Atkinson 21-7 and Ian Jones 21-8.
Ian Young and Neil Chanin scored points for the visitors.
Third in the table Co-op defeated relegation candidates Roose Cons B 13-1. Leading the way for the home side were Gordon McGregor, 21-6, Dave Wilson, Stan Whitehouse, 21-8, John Proudfoot and Peter Garner, 21-6. Jeff Howard saved his side from a dry rub.
Another side to register a 13-1 win were Roose Cons A, who defeated Newdale.
Leading wins came from Jimmy Johnson, 21-9, Phil Dixon, 21-7, Derek Twiname, 21-6, Brian Taylor, 21-4 and George Whitehouse. Keith Burton scored his side’s lone point.
Police reached their highest position in the league for a long time following a 10-4 win against Kirkby.
Roly West, 21-7, was in brilliant form, well supported by Ron Wilson, 21-8, Gary Bleasdale, 21-9, Mike Simpson and Ian McBride.
Best for the village side were John Bell, 21-7 and Colin Johnson.
Barrow Island surprisingly beat Walney Park 10-4, with John Slowey, 21-9, Peter Murphy, Jim Tongue, Dave Leece and John Hulston all doing the business.
Steve Leeder, Paul Gauntlett and Ken Law replied for the Park.
In division one, Hawcoat Park now lead the table by 19 points from King Alfred, who have a game in hand.
This week the leaders hopped onto the club’s other green to play Barrow Park and returned 12-3 victors.
Matt Ryder, Bob Stewart and Dave Ryder, 21-6, scored the Park’s points.
Leading the way for the league leaders were Tonie Moxham, 21-5, Tony Kneale, Ian France, 21-7, Joe Knight, 21-3 and Dave Hird.
King Alfred moved into second place following two excellent away victories over Glaxo and Hawcoat Park A.
Mike Askew, Dave Sankey and Ian McCartney all triumphed for Glaxo; as did Paul Cain, Eric Skyrme and Jack Curphey for Hawcoat Park A.
King Alf’s double winners were Andy Thornton, Steve Fullard, Jeff Hinde, Steve Oldfield and Bill Higginson.
North Scale had a good 9-5 victory over Lindal. The scoreline could have been different had the village side not lost two very close games.
Best wins for the home side came from Chris Irvine 21-8, John Simpson 21-7, Mal Gwynne and young Zach Walker.
On-song for the village side were Simon Perry, Kevin Rooney and Paul Thompson.
Salthouse shared the games with West Mount, but gained the aggregate and the game 8-5 thanks to good wins from Bill Thompson, 21-7, John Taylor, 21-2 and Ken Howarth.
Best for the Abbey Road side were Dave Hodgson, 21-6 and Stephen Waugh, 21-8.
Post Office defeated Dalton Cons 11-3. In form for the Posties were Mike Fieldhouse, 21-9, Stuart Harrison, Dave Mellon and Andy Boardman.
Kevin Clarke, Alan Newsham and Stan Halesworth performed strongly the Cons.
Martin Barrow, Roger Barrow, Doug Millburn and Stewart Thorpe were the form men for Institute as they defeated Glaxo 9-5, whose leading wins came from Brian Johnson, 21-4, Alan Slater and Bill Edmondson.
Lowly Dalton Cons A shared the games with Barrow Park, but due to good wins from Ken Storey, 21-9, Bob Corkill and Dave Coulter they gained the aggregate points by one chalk and the game 8-6. Replying well for the Park were Russ Harris, Brian Beard and Erroll Wall.
Bill Brown, 21-9, Roly Price and Joe McDonald led the way for King Alf A as they were beaten 10-5 by Roose Cons, whose leading wins came from Ray Fisher, 21-6, Derek Yates, 21-8, Bill Bowes and Mike Hool.

Players will compete for the Bob Pattinson Memorial Trophy.
The event is sponsored by Browns Quality Meats and local bowlers will be made welcome.
