BARROW’s Dane Ghyll School have enjoyed plenty of sporting success of late.
On the gymnastics front, the Infant team’s first success was in the 'Thorncliffe cluster of schools event, where they competed against other Thorncliffe 'feeder' schools.
They won this event and went on to represent Thorncliffe in the Barrow Schools' Gymnastics Competition held at Parkview.
Once again the team of five girls were successful and were chosen to represent Barrow in the county finals at Penrith. All the girls performed brilliantly and were a credit to the school and town. They won the competition and became county champions.
The school is particularly proud of them as this is the first gymnastics competition they have entered for a long time.
The school would like to give a special thanks to the coaches, Mrs Chapman, Mrs Bell and Mrs Reynolds and for the support of the parents.
Four teams from Dane Ghyll competed in the Barrow Schools Cross Country relay competition at Walney School, which attracted many schools from throughout the Furness area.
The year five boys finished a very creditable second with a fantastic individual performance from Matthew Coverdale. All the year five girls team ran brilliantly, particularly Bethany Carlisle on the last lap, they well deserved their first place. The year six girls battled hard and finished seventh.
The year six boys event proved to be a real battle with several schools challenging for pole position.
All four boys ran fantastic legs and went on to be placed first in this thrilling encounter.
Teacher Mrs Caron Reynolds commented on the teams' wonderful determination to perform well.
The Dane Ghyll Basketball team have had the most fantastic season winning both the junior league and junior cup.
The team have been together for two years as a team, culminating in this deserved success.
The benefits of working together over the two years has, with the hard work of the children, left them undefeated for the 2007/8 season.
Grateful thanks from the school to Paul Eccles who, as a parent, has given his time and efforts to coach the team.
Four boys entered the Mini-Tennis Red Inter Primary School Competition and won their group games played at Chetwynde School.
They then went on to play in the county finals at Penrith where they played well to come third in the play-offs for the county.
On Sunday, Dane Ghyll entered a team in the Mini-Tennis Orange Inter Primary School Competition.
The four team members competed against teams from Holy Family and Chetwynde Primary schools to make it through to the finals at Castle Park, Penrith after closely beating a determined Chetwynde school team for a hard won result.
Coach Stephan Jones has coached the children through the Thorncliffe Sports Initiative in the past and is delighted with their success.
