South Walney Junior School celebrates success
Last updated at 16:46, Thursday, 06 December 2012
THE community of an island school “where everyone is made to feel welcome” is celebrating receiving a glowing report.
South Walney Junior School has been judged as good by the education watchdog, Ofsted.
In their report, inspectors said pupils benefit from teaching that “is consistently good and sometimes outstanding”.
Ofsted noted that throughout the school, teachers provide pupils with work that “gets the best out of them” and “they make good progress because teachers know their individual needs”.
Ofsted said pupils are taught well and make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics, and “by the time they leave in Year Six they reach standards above, and often significantly above, the levels of pupils of the same age in other schools”.
The report also praised the exciting clubs and visits that develop pupils’ skills at the Amphitrite Street school.
Ofsted also said headteacher Jackie Dower and the senior leaders have developed “a highly effective” team and are committed to improving the school.
Ofsted also noted the “supportive” work of the governing body.
Miss Dower said: “We are delighted with the report which gives a very positive picture of the school and all it has achieved since the last inspection. I am particularly pleased the report recognises we have a wonderful group of children, whose behaviour and attitude to learning are outstanding, supported by a dedicated team of parents, staff and governors who are determined to make a difference to pupils’ lives.
“Who could ask for anything more? I feel very proud and fortunate to be the headteacher of South Walney Junior School and to be working in such a supportive local community.” Chairman of governors Les Hall said: “I believe South Walney Junior School is a great school, with fantastic staff and a great ethos. Although we didn’t need Ofsted to tell us this, it is pleasing they recognised it.”
