SAD FAREWELL: Mick Cassidy

In his Evening Mail column today (page 35), Sear says Cassidy, who made his last appearance at Craven Park in the 22-8 win over Keighley on Friday had been a valuable asset.

“Presuming we get the necessary points for promotion at Swinton this week, we will not be seeing Mick Cassidy playing on Craven Park again,” he said.

“Hats off to Des (Johnston, Raiders chief executive) for nipping in and signing up Mick when Widnes Vikings were in danger of folding. It must rank as one of the best bits of business the club have done for some seasons.

“Cassidy has been committed to the cause both on and off the pitch. Some of the ex-Super League players may not have lived up to expectation, but He proved a valuable asset and was never far from being man-of-the-match.

“We are exploring several avenues with a view to securing his continued involvement with the club.”

Cassidy has already expanded his role this year to involve assisting coach Dave Clark with the training of the squad and has previously said he wants to carry on in the game after his retirement.

l The club are running a second supporters’ coach to Saturday’s game at Swinton. Anyone wanting to go is advised to book early by calling in at the Rugby Shop, Scott Street, Barrow, or calling Karen on 01229 820273.
