Representatives for a generation
Published at 13:19, Friday, 28 May 2010
EQUALLY worthy of praise are Royal Navy Coxswain Steven Richard Thorpe and Chief Petty Officer Steven Bell who stepped in when they saw a bouncer having difficulty.
CONGRATULATIONS to Jonathan Huddleston who landed the prestigious Apprentice of the Year accolade.
He has worked at the Evening Mail offices and shown himself to be an extremely capable young man.
So too do our congratulations go to Hannah Burton who has been named the UK’s top Sea Cadet.
Eighteen-year-old Jonathan and 17-year-old Petty Hannah are outstanding representatives for the teenage generation.
The media and society in general are often quick to highlight the negative side of their peers.
And some young people are guilty as charged.
However, while vociferous and high profile, those who give youngsters a bad name are far outnumbered by those, such as Hannah and Jonathan, for whom we have nothing but praise.
It’s gratifying that, even in these litigious times, and in the long standing of the senior service, they placed themselves between assailant and victim.
Everybody does not have the training they have received and public intervention while a crime is being committed is discouraged.
However, the two men were ready and able to intervene during an assault that could otherwise have escalated.
And for that they are justifiably commended.
