Holt full of praise for Shaw

RYAN Shaw must have put a smile on the face of Raiders coach Darren Holt on Sunday with a scintillating performance against Oldham.

Warrington dual-reg player Shaw ran in four tries, including a half-length of the field effort, and with his goal-kicking he notched a personal tally of 26 points, as the Raiders scored a 42-16 win.

And Holt would no doubt like to see more of the same this weekend when they take on Cumbrian rivals Workington at Derwent Park, in arguably what will be the Championship One title decider.

While Holt was pleased with Shaw’s points contribution he was also happy with his team’s performance, and having a virtually injury free squad gives him the type of selection headache he would prefer to have for the trip to Derwent Park.

Shaw, who along with fellow Wolves youngsters Brad Brennan and Ryan Duffy have impressed Holt since joining up with the Craven Park side earlier this summer.

Shaw’s efforts on Sunday earned him the man of the match award.

But as Holt said: “I think he would be first to congratulate his team-mates because they did a lot of work for him and he finished off the tries.

“Ryan has been playing very, very well since he’s come up. To score four tries is no mean feat.

“He’s also been kicking very well since he’s come up. He missed a couple of kicks that he would normally get as well. He could easily have got over 30 points to be honest. If he does that every game I will be happy. He has come through their youth set-up, they have done a lot of good work with him.

“He is still only a young lad but a very promising lad. The other two lads that we have got up from Warrington are only young kids but you can see the good habits that they have got coming through Warrington’s youth set up.”

All three arrived at Barrow when the side was struggling with injuries and their presence was described as a “godsend” by Holt yesterday.

He said: “They have fitted in very well and all done very well.

“Having coached Ryan now for a number of months he’s like any player, there are things that can be improved upon, but all the ingredients are there with Ryan.

“He has got a great work ethic, natural talent and raw pace, very, very good hands. But I think he will be the first to admit he has still got areas of the game he needs to work on as we all have.

“For him it’s about continual progression, continual improvement and then see how far he can take it.”
