Holty named Furness coach

RAIDERS legend Darren Holt has been appointed player/coach of Furness Rugby Union Club, writes GRAHAM DIXON.
But Barrow RL’s record points scorer is still hoping to sort out a deal with chief executive Des Johnston to keep him at Craven Park for another season.
Holt has had second thoughts about retiring from the league game after helping Raiders to the title.
However, the 31-year-old half-back played for Furness RU last season after Barrow RL delayed offering him a contract until the start of the season.
He will be playing stand-off at the Strawberry Grounds tomorrow in the opening cup game against Ruskin Park.
Said Holt today: “I was pleased with my form for Raiders at the end of the season and the backing from fans but my future is still up in the air.
“I had hoped to have met with Des before tonight’s presentation evening but this hasn’t happened.
“They know of my commitment to Furness which follows on from last year.
“There are great facilities at Furness and I hope to bring a bit of professionalism to the club.”
Furness president Dave Maguire today said: “We are delighted to secure the services of such a rugby talent and he will be a key factor in the continuing success of the club as he takes on the mantle of player/coach.
“With such a wealth of young talent emerging throughout the club there can be no better equipped player than Darren to continue the rise of the ambitious Furness club.”
