Brett first to play in every shirt as RL seal promotion

BRETT McDermott made Barrow RL history during last night’s academic 40-20 defeat at Doncaster.

The Raiders skipper started the last game of the season at full-back – making him the only man to play in every position for the club.

McDermott, who was wearing the number one shirt, reverted to his normal position in the pack after a few minutes, Nick Beach dropping back.

With promotion to the first division virtually guaranteed – unless they lost by more than 88 points – Raiders coach Dave Clark had no hesitation in starting his skipper at full-back

He said: “Keith Nutter (club historian) told me earlier in the week that Brett would make history if he played full-back.

“I don’t know if Brett was aware of this either and it was an honour to hand him the number one shirt.

“It is a fantastic achievement to have played in every position for the club and make history.

“The players knew the position regarding promotion, as long as we lost by fewer than 88 points.

“They went into it proud of their achievements and wanting to give a performance in the last game of the year.

“We were a bit more low key on the bus home than after the Swinton game, a lot of the lads had work in the morning. We’ll be meeting up to celebrate on Saturday.”

Clark, who has achieved promotion in his first year, praised a real team effort throughout the club from chief executive Des Johnston and the board to all the coaching staff, players and loyal supporters.

He said: “I want to thank Des for the support and commitment he has shown to me since getting the job. We have worked really well together all year.

“I am grateful for the opportunity. People have had their doubts but he (Des) has been positive throughout and I am proud to have got promotion.

“We lost a lot of players who were not replaced and the squad was a bit thin. It was a massive achievement by the team and the players deserve full recognition.”

Clark also wanted to pay tribute to his family, especially wife Melanie and the in-laws for baby-sitting!

He added: “It is a real team effort because your family has to make the sacrifices.

“I think this goes for all the players, whether it be their wives or girlfriends. Playing rugby needs a big commitment.”
