Half-back Holt wants a perfect career finale

BARROW Raiders round off their promotion-winning season at Doncaster tonight in a momentous game for Darren Holt.
The veteran half-back will pull on the Barrow shirt for the 283rd time at the Keepmoat Stadium, knowing it could also be the last (8pm kick-off).
The 31-year-old admits to having second thoughts about whether to bow out, but at the same time feels, if tonight is to be his last appearance for the club, there would be no better way to leave the stage.
“If this is it, then this is definitely a good way to go out,” he said.
“If it was to be my last year, what better way than taking Barrow up into the first division?
“If I could come to some arrangement to help them stay there, then that would be an even greater achievement, but again this could be my last game.”
Holt has broken all kinds of records since coming to Craven Park, scoring 1013 goals (including 60 drop goals) and 65 tries in his 282 appearances to date.
That gives him a total of 2,226 points for the club, more than even the great Willie Horne managed.
There could be more to come though, with Holt getting itchy feet about retirement.
“It could well be my last game, but like I have said from the start, you never say never,” he added.
“You are a long time retired and I said I would get to the end of the season and see what happened.
“I’m hoping that the board and Des and whoever want to have a chat with me, then they do it sooner rather than later.
“If they want to go a different way, or if we can’t come to some arrangement, then I would just like to announce my retirement and move on to other things.
“I can’t say a definite yes or no. At the start of the season I was of the mindset, 99 per cent, that this was going to be my last year.
“But I am just going to play it by ear. I always said I would play for Barrow as long as I could do a job and as long as they wanted me there and I was performing.”
Mick Cassidy is again absent for the Raiders tonight, having missed the game at Swinton due to family commitments.
On-loan Whitehevan hooker Carl Sice also drops out of the squad named by coach Dave Clark.
Joe McKenna is named among the substitutes, with an otherwise unchanged 17.
Tonight’s game has been made all-ticket by Doncaster, but they can be bought from the ground before the game, though fans have been advised to turn up at the Keepmoat earlier than usual.
Raiders (from): Andrew Beattie, Mike Backhouse, Liam Harrison, Mike Whitehead, James Nixon, Brad Nicholls, Darren Holt, Jamie Butler, Andy Ellis, Brett McDermott, Martin Ostler, Dave Armitstead, Liam Finch, Lee Dutton, Paul Raftery, Nick Beach, Joe McKenna.
- Ulverston are home to Askam tonight in the first round of the Barton Townley Cup (6.30pm kick-off). On Friday, Dalton take on Walney at Kelland Park, kick-off 6.30pm.
I think that he should stay because he makes good progress to the team and is an excellant team player.
