Quarter of small Cumbrian businesses optimistic

Almost a quarter of small businesses in Cumbria say they are “extremely positive” about the future – a higher proportion than anywhere else in the UK.

The finding comes from a survey of 2,000 micro businesses, all employing 10 people or fewer, carried out for office supplies provider Viking.

John O’Keeffe, commercial director at Viking, said: “Businesses in Cumbria are doing extremely well despite funding concerns, which have no doubt worsened since the onset of the recession.

“Despite this, it is great to see such optimism in the county. It bucks the trend.”

The Viking survey covered more than 20 business sectors.

Have your say

A great headline figure, but what about the other three quarters of small businesses? How many of them are optimistic, how many are unsure and how many feel pessimistic or extremely pessimistic? Rather than selective statistics could the News & Star (& other newspapers in the CN group) please start providing more complete figures in cases like this so that we can get an accurate and balanced picture and not just some headline grabbimng figure?

I totally agree this article, and it needs a positive contribution for people to move their businesses forward, as a small contractor working within the civil engineering field our order book is fuller now than anytime in the last 5 years, but a big factor in this has been the HSBC in Carlisle they have believed in our work ethic and our slow approach to expansion and have backed us time and time again, it goes to show not all bankers are the same. Local knowledge, steady hands on the financial issues, steady un rushed growth and a willingness to step outside the box and once again we can work our was out of this and not use tax payers money to fund non jobs in the public sector as Mr Brown tried to do
