WHAT started out as a brief stay in a new town has turned into what can only be described as a permanent move.

WHEN Doris Eathorne came down with husband Billy from Scotland it was only going to be a six-month stop for work reasons. Six months turned into 31 years.

During that time, Doris has lived in the same house she and Billy found together when they first arrived in Barrow.

Sadly, Billy died five years ago but the family home contains a mass of memories for Doris and their two daughters Belinda and Vanessa.

The house, 10 Ocean Road, on Walney, is a forecourted family home with two sizeable reception rooms, a newly-fitted kitchen and utility room, a recently installed bathroom and three good bedrooms.

There is an entrance vestibule with a tile floor and entrance hall which has Kardean flooring and the original style cornice and ceiling rose.

Outside there is the forecourt with a paved front, raised border and pathway, while at the back of the house is a backyard and a garage.

Although it is her mother’s house, Belinda is the one who is the dab hand at decorating and this much-loved home has been kept fresh and modern while retaining its character.

Belinda said: “All four of us have loved the house and the area after moving here when we were very young.

“Mum and dad fell in love with Walney and the house when they first looked around it.

“They even loved the name of the street – Ocean Road – and we have had a wonderful family life here.

“It is in such a great location with the beach at one end and the channel at the other.

“It is a dream place for those who enjoy walking or have a dog.

“I have done the wallpapering and the painting throughout the house, which has really high ceilings, and we describe it as Victorian style but with a modern twist. We put in a new kitchen two years ago and because at the time mum was planning to stay here we had a new bathroom installed just a few months ago.”

The super modern kitchen has been fitted with a range of high-gloss white base and wall units with brushed aluminium handles and a black granite-effect work surface.

The fitted appliances are included in the sale – filter cooker hood with fan and light, Lamona ceramic electric hob, fan assisted double oven with grill, built-in dishwasher, microwave and fridge.

The kitchen has recess and splash back tiling which matches the work surface and the floor is black ceramic tile-effect with a step up to the ground floor bathroom reached through a colonial-style door.

There is also a door leading to the handy utility room. Double doors join the lounge and the dining area with its side pantry.

The ground-floor bathroom has a three-piece suite in white with chrome fittings (fitted in April).

There is a low level, P-shaped bath, over bath thermostatic shower and a low level flush WC.

Belinda added: “Because it is a family home when they put in a new kitchen it has all been done to the highest quality as has everything in the house.

“The house has two double bedrooms and a single bedroom.

“We get plenty of sun starting at the front of the house then moving round.

“We have a really lovely sunny backyard.”

The yard has well established borders and a back garage/workshop.

It has been a hard decision for Doris but she now knows the time is right to move and is looking for a bungalow.

There will be an open day for the house on Saturday July 2 from 2pm until 4pm.

The house, 10 Ocean Road, Barrow, is on the market with Corrie and Co Estate Agents for £137,950 (no chain).
