SUZANNE Robinson and Dave Mansergh's delightful home has been part of their family for at least 110 years, as they told SUSAN GOODSON.

SUZANNE Robinson is a big fan of older properties and has fallen in love with the area and the community which their home is part of.

It is a lovely community, she says, where people look out for each other and it is boosted by being a safe area with well-known, family-friendly pubs and a hotel which is a very popular venue for weddings.

Although the couple have made sure that they have kept the character of their home, they have also modernised it after buying it off Dave’s grandparents.

Incredibly, the property has been in the family for at least 110 years. Dave’s great grandparents lived there and his grandmother Winnie Mansergh was born in it. When Winnie's parents died her older sister Sally Dearn took on the property and lived in it for many many years until her late 80s. Suzanne and Dave bought it from her daughter Marjorie Dearn when Sally sadly passed away 11 years ago.

The house - 3 Goose Green, Dalton - is in a sought-after residential location with easy access to Dalton town centre. The deceptively spacious three-storey terrace cottage is ideal for a couple or family and has a lounge, kitchen diner, two bedrooms, a bathroom and an open landing that is currently utilised as a third bedroom and could be easily partitioned for more privacy.

At the front of the property is a good-sized, south-facing sheltered garden with decked seating area and to the back is a shared passageway with outside store.

Although the south facing garden is perfect for the family in the summer months, Suzanne loves coming home in the winter to their cosy home with its log burning fire, which keeps the whole house warm.

Coupled with its thick walls, the house is very energy efficient.

Explaining the changes, Suzanne said: “We have decorated right through but I wanted to very much keep the country cottage feel to it. It is such a lovely home to come back to on the dark winter nights. I love this time of year in the house.

“We had a new roof put on two years ago, a new fitted kitchen installed and a new bathroom. Outside it was very 'country garden' with a pond and trees, but unfortunately the trees were so close to the house they blocked out the sun so we had them removed and had the area landscaped and put in the decking."

It is a very secure place for young children because there is a wall right round enclosing the garden so they cannot get out at all when they are playing.

The only people who come up the communal path are our other neighbours.

She added: “The sun comes up at the back of the house and then moves around.

"Our living room looks out over the garden, but the kitchen is my favourite room of the house as it is light and bright and I feel that it is the heart of our home.

"It is a large country-style kitchen dinner with solid wood worktops and a large Belfast sink. There is plenty of cupboard storage and the view from the kitchen looks out on to the historic pinfold where they used to keep the stray animals of Dalton and behind that Chequers.

“Upstairs there are two good-sized bedrooms and we use the landing as a third bedroom with wardrobes and the bathroom is on the other side.

“It is a ‘kind house’ that has had nothing go wrong in the 11 years we have been here and it has been easy to maintain. Although we had a new roof put on there were never any leaks.

“It is going to be hard to leave it, especially as it has always been the family house, but the children are getting bigger and we need something that is just a bit bigger.

“We will never find a nicer community and area than we have here.

"I enjoy riding my friend's horse in my spare time and use to love riding through the fields just next to Goose Green. it is a lovely rural place to live with lots of nature on our doorstep and that's what I especially love about it."

One thing the couple will be taking with them from the house is Dave’s great great parents original family bible, which is kept safely in the attic.
